The emulsion of tempera colour is in fact watercolour, in which the pigment is tied to an oil emulsion with the emulsifier. This results in a less dense consistency of the colour and its applicability to any medium.
The base of KOH-I-NOOR HARDTMUTH tempera colour is finely distributed and perfectly dispersed organic and inorganic pigments in an emulsion of suitable oil with an herbal binder dissolved in water. Micro-pulverized calcium carbonate is used as a filler. The watercolours also contain other materials, e.g. thixotropic silicone monoxide and tensides, improving its features and light permanency. The tempera colours are easily water-soluble; they do not leave traces after brush strokes. They can be easily mixed together and take advantage of their ability to dissolve already dried colour layers. They allow sharp drawing strokes, from which they blend better than oil colour. Compared to oil colour they dry in a considerably faster period – immediately after the evaporation of the water. They are also suitable for the work of experienced artists.
The tempera colours excel mainly due to theirs great colour richness, light permanency and brilliance. The qualitative features (opacity, light permanency, colour index) are indicated on the labels of the individual tubes. The tempera colours should be stored at room temperature, protected against frost and heat
